I am particularly inspired by Burr Elementary in Chicago. What was an empty concrete pad next to their playground two years ago is now a thriving Learning Garden and children's mosaic. Burr was one of the first Pilot schools in Chicago. It is so awesome to see them so engaged in their fourth growing season with us! oonnennee- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jim Javenkoski <siaumsam Date: Sat, Aug 17, 2013 at 10:42 AM Subject: Re: TKC Chicago: Burr mosaic art To: Peter Vitale <petenmmthekichencommuniners>, Jamie Wirkler <} Cc: Team TKC <team@thekitchencommunity.org> Hi, Peter and Jamie: Thanks for sharing your photos of Burr Elementary. The mosaic is the creation of Green Star Movement, a Chicago-based NPO which "inspires students and community members to design and realize public art". There is a gallery of three photos of the mosaic on their Web site. The corner of the mural features a short phrase written by the students: "Every child is a different kind of flower and together make this world a beautiful garden." To expand on Jamie's point about Burr as a model for Learning Garden sites, the school has a (sometimes functional) wind turbine that helps power the grow lights used to germinate seedlings for the garden. Further, they launched a "Garden Buddies" program last year in which older students are paired with younger students to help them learn to cultivate the garden. Yesterday, Assistant Principal Amy Klimowski agreed to host our first CPS Learning Gardens teacher training event on Friday afternoon. It promises to be an inspiring hour of "show & tell" for those CPS teachers who are able to attend. Kind regards, Jim EFTA00678596
