I do apologize for the delay in getting back to you. After review of your letter unfortunately I must remind you that this office does not provide legal advice to private citizens. According to Virgin Islands law the Office of the Attorney General only provide legal advice to agencies and instrumentalities of the Government of the Virgin Islands. Furthermore, I believe that your request for an interpretation or concurrence on the interpretation of a federal statute should be directed to the Office of the United States Attorney. The statutes to which you refer in your letter are federal statutes that would be enforced by the Office of the US. Attorney not the V.I. Department of Justice. As you may be aware the local laws governing the possession of firearms are found in Title 23 Virgin Islands Code Chapter 5 and Title 14 Virgin Islands Code Chapter 113. I invite you to review those provisions of local law as you advise your clients regarding the possession of firearms. Very truly yours, bed a Vincent F. Fr qh.
