We let our standards slip in the piece "Maxwell-led software firm accused of fraud." Aside from any factual innaccuracies, | personally do not like guilt-by-association pieces and | regret the fact that this slipped through the net. Polly has now left the Guardian and so | have been unable to discuss the article with her. But in anycase, alarm bells should have gone off amongst our desk editors here. The Guardian does have a policy of putting its hand up when we get things wrong and, to this end, we do run a daily "Corrections and Clarifications" column, as a number of US papers do. You are probably aware that we are running a correction relating to your brother Kevin in tomorrow's paper. I have discussed the matter with lan Mayes, our Readers' Editor, who agrees that we should also offer you a correction and apology on this matter. Because of the complexity of the matter, it is going to take a little while to the wording right, and so I'd be grateful if you could bear with us until Monday,. By then I will be in a position to send you the proposed wording. In the meantime, on a personal note, I apologise for the hurt caused. EFTA00578505
